Today's Tip: Create a standing- up work space
If you've got kids and you're in a small space, chances are you don't have much room for a traditional desk. Or chances are, you've got a desk but it's covered in other things and has drawers with things you don't often use. I've written about TV trays_, and how those are nice, but for a more permanent headquarters for your office things and your laptop, tryusing a bookshelf that you already have and clearing a space for your computer and some office essentials. It doesn't have drawers in it, so you can't really accumulate crap in it, but it gives you a spot.
I've done this a few times. At one point we had shelves in our dining room and I used the top as my computer headquarters. We got rid of that a few years ago, to add space, of course, and I cleared off a shelf of our bookshelf in our bedroom and it is now my laptop's home.
Often my computer is other places, but that is its designated spot, and where I keep things like paperclips and pens and pencils and sticky notes, some inspirational notes, like one of my favorites: Stephen King's "The road to hell is paved with adverbs," to sneakily help with my writing. I use one of those magnificent little hanging shelf extender things from The Container Store, which I cannot find on their website now, but which I adore, and set a drawer insert for pens and pencils and such.
You don't need a desk! But it's nice to have a desk spot. Happy Monday and happy desk-tossing.
